Models

The collection contains a number of fine and interesting examples including:

  • Models of river craft, sailing ships and steamers.  Whilst a fully typological collection has not been attempted, that is the purpose of the National Maritime Museum and the Science Museum, there are some very rare items.  One is a beautiful model of a City of London Harbour Master’s skiff. Probably built by Messers Searle of Stanegate, Lambeth, around 1840.  Another is the 22ft long Ironworks, on the Isle of Dogs.
    There are also two large 1850a half-models discovered in 1980 in a loft in what had been the office at John Scott Russell’s yard, at Millwall;

  • Two 22ft long models of the Port of London from Westminster to the Royal Docks, with a separate section for Tilbury Docks, dating to 1938 and 1960 respectively;

  • A number of models of different port installations and warehouse buildings, including a large model of the container terminal at Tilbury, around 1974, and a wonderful model of the riverside wharf at Brewers, Chester, and Galley Quay, in the City of London, made out of re-used bills of lading in 1850.
