The collections have a unique significance to London’s history, given that the port has provided the key  to so much of London’s economic and social importance over 2,000 years.

During the period 1979-1990 the continued decline in activity on the historic upriver port area, much of it in the face of comprehensive range of material relating to the numerous activities associated with the day-to-day operation of the Port of London.

As a result a very comprehensive collection of material was acquired.   Essentially this falls into the following groups:
