Spotlight on food, shops and shopping

John and Mary Ann Sainsbury opened their first shop in 1869. Since then the type of food we eat, the shops we buy it from and the way we do our shopping have changed dramatically.

Instead of shopping at small local shops, most of us serve ourselves in enormous out-of-town supermarkets. Instead of eating the same meals that our grandparents did, we can enjoy exciting and varied food from all around the world.
