Package presentation

Sainsbury's Red Label teabags, 1989

Packaging needs to catch the customer’s eye so that he or she will buy the product. It also needs to give factual information such as what the package contains and the number, or weight, of the items. Today food packaging usually also provides dietary information, cooking or freezing instructions and sometimes recipe suggestions. All this information helps to give the customer confidence in the product.

This is a box for Sainsbury’s Red Label teabags from 1989. The name on the box identifies it as Sainsbury’s own brand. The fonts used are clear and easy to read. The bright red colour of the box stands out and also links with the name of the tea. Although tea bags are a modern invention, the teapot and teacups create a cosy, traditional image. It is designed to appeal to an adult rather than a child.
