Celebrating in a diverse world

Chinese New Year

Britain is a multicultural society. People from all around the world have come to live here. They have brought with them their own food, culture, religion and traditions. Many schools, communities and shops celebrate a variety of different festivals from many different cultures. The Notting Hill Carnival in London, for instance, was started in 1959 as a way of uniting the different communities in the local area. Today it is attended by thousands of people from a variety of cultural backgrounds.

This is the cover of a leaflet given out in a Sainsbury’s store to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Many Sainsbury’s stores celebrate different festivals depending upon their local communities. Staff sometimes wear traditional clothing instead of uniforms and shelves are stocked with traditional food.
