Picnics

Lucky Dogs leaflet, 1934

In the past a picnic was a meal where everyone brought something for other people to share. Today, a picnic means a meal eaten outside, often in a pretty place such as a park, a beach or in the countryside. Food eaten at a picnic is therefore always cold. Traditionally it is packed in a wicker hamper.

This picture shows the cover of a Sainsbury’s leaflet in 1934. Customers could enter a competition to win a picnic hamper by taking a photograph of their family enjoying Sainsbury’s food on a picnic. Sainsbury’s have sold cooked meats, pies and cheeses since Victorian times. During the summer months they encouraged people to buy these foods for picnics.
