Food from around the world

Curry powder, 1960s

People from other countries, such as India and China, have come to live and work in Britain since before Victorian times. During the 1950s, 60s and 70s a number of people migrated from the Caribbean and, more recently, from other countries such as Turkey, Bangladesh, Nigeria and Kosovo. These migrants have all contributed to the variety of food we eat today.

This picture shows a pot of curry powder from the 1960s. Sainsbury’s has sold curry power and mango chutney since the 1920s. They first started selling Chinese foods, such as bamboo shoots, noodles and soy sauce in the early 1960s. Since the 1980s Sainsbury’s has produced chilled ready-meals which include popular dishes from around the world.
