A Taste of Italy, 1997

Before the Second World War a number of Jewish people fled to Britain to escape the Nazis.  After the war other refugees arrived from the new communist states. Some Sainsbury’s stores had stocked a few Jewish foods since before the war. These were in areas where there were already large Jewish communities. After the war, other stores began to stock a range of continental foods including salami from Hungary, sausage from Poland and liver sausage from Belgium.

This picture shows the cover of a Sainsbury’s recipe book from 1997. Since the 1970s it has been cheaper for people from Britain to go on foreign holidays than it was in the past. This has also helped to make food from European countries, such as France, Greece and Spain popular.
