Healthy eating

Healthy eating poster, c1980

In the past poor people had very little to eat while rich people often ate too much meat and dairy products. Today we know that to keep healthy we should try to eat a balanced diet of different types of food. We know that we should eat plenty of fruit, vegetables and cereals. We should also eat some dairy products and some meat, fish or nuts. We should try to avoid eating too much fat, sugar or salt.

This picture shows a Sainsbury’s advertisement from about 1980. Sainsbury’s has stocked fresh produce since 1955. In the 1970s they started selling vegetables such as courgettes, aubergines and peppers which some customers had never seen before. Since the 1980s they have stocked goods such as low-fat milk, extra-lean mince meat and fruit canned in juice instead of sugary syrup. Today Sainsbury's ’Kids’ range has no artificial colours or flavourings.
