Shopping memories
Customer Mrs Bird recalls shopping in a counter service store:
‘There were a lot of them. You never had to wait when you went in to a shop, unless you got an old farmer, or someone coming in to spend the morning talking to the shopkeeper, which was rather disconcerting. Or some of the women would come in and tell them all their troubles, but apart from that, there was no waiting. There was always plenty of people to serve.’
