Depots: the present day

Today, Sainsbury's runs seven depots, including the original Basingstoke and Hoddesden sites and other regional centres such as Worcester, Merseyside and Birmingham. Numerous other contracted depots have enabled Sainsbury's to spread distribution further across the UK.

In April 2000 Sainsbury's distribution centre in Basingstoke became the first retail site in the UK to achieve registration under the European Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), in recognition of environmental improvements made to the site.

The new Sainsbury's distribution centre at Pineham, Northampton is being constructed (by landowner & developer ProLogis) to significantly reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions at the site. Features include a combined heat, cooling and power unit (CHCP) which provides electricity for the depot, rainwater recycling to cut water consumption by 50% and a day-lit roof to reduce need for artificial lighting. The site received 'Green Award' for Sustainable Achievement at the Industrial Agents Society awards in October 2007.
