South West

Sainsbury’s first expanded into the West Country with branches at Bridgwater and Taunton in 1973.

Devon’s first store opened in November 1976 in Exeter. At the time of opening, it was the furthest branch from London.

The new Sainsbury’s store was part of Exeter’s new £5 million Guildhall shopping centre. The opening was eagerly anticipated by former Sainsbury’s customers who had moved to the West Country, who wrote to the store asking when they could start shopping there! The new store proved to be very popular. Soon after it opened, a coach company ran Christmas shopping trips for customers from Torbay.
