New technology at Sainsbury's: 1989-2000

1989 - Computerised high-bay warehouse for non-perishable goods opened at Buntingford depot.

1991 - Credit cards accepted

1992 - SABRE (Sales Based Replenishment) stock ordering system introduced, which made more effective use of the point of sale information provided by scanning.

1994 - SCION system launched, working in conjunction with SABRE to supply chain systems strategy

1995 - Sainsbury's became the first British supermarket to offer goods for sale on the internet through its Wine Direct service.

29/7/97 - Sainsbury's store in Kempshott, Basingstoke was the first British supermarket to offer customers self-scanning using radio frequency equipment – system developed by Symbol Technologies.

26/6/99 - Sainsbury's rolled out interactive touch screen terminals

22/11/99 - Sainsbury's started e-business in partnership with LineOne

23/03/00 - J Sainsbury Plc announced business-to-business e-commerce venture

12/04/00 - Home shopping service rebranded bringing 'Sainsbury's to You'
