Here you can view displays of images and items from the Sainsbury Archive and browse information on the history of Sainsbury’s and shopping as well as the history of the docks and the local area, including:

Reference books

A variety of reference books, covering the history of London, the docks, retail and the grocery trade.

Image files

Portfolios of reproduction photographs and documents. Topics illustrated include the major dock systems, local Sainsbury’s branches and grocery price lists and product design.

Online resources

A range of online resources is available from the computers in the study centre.

Also available during reception desk opening hours:

Films: four compilations capture the port of London in all its glory from the 1920s to the 1970s.

CD-ROMs: electronic copies of Mariner’s Mirror, the Journal of the Society for Nautical Research from its inception in 1911 to the year 2000.

Journals: JS Journal, now known as The Journal, the in-house publication for Sainsbury’s and PLA Monthly, the journal of the Port of London Authority

Information zone opening times

The information zone is open to Museum visitors between 10am and 6pm, 7 days a week.

The information zone reception desk is usually open at the following times each week when our staff are available to answer your enquiries and book out resources such as films and journals:

Tuesdays: 10.30am-1pm and 2pm-4.30pm
Wednesdays: 2pm-4.30pm
Thursdays: 10.30am-1pm and 2pm-4.30pm
Fridays: 2pm-4.30pm

Second Saturday of every month  10.30am-1pm and 2pm-4.30pm (excepting bank holiday weekends).
