Accessing the archives & general enquiries
Due to the delicate nature of the documents and the quantity of material, the archives are housed in a separate environmentally-controlled store, so it is not possible for researchers to browse. When you make an appointment, we discuss your enquiry with you and are then able to bring all the relevant material to the search room for consultation.
For a peek behind the scenes, our regular introductory sessions include a brief tour of the archive stores.
If there is an image you particularly like, you will usually be able to order a photographic print from us (depending on copyright restrictions). We also provide a photocopying service for suitable material. Ask the archivists for more details.
The Museum Of London Docklands archives keeps information on the history of the docks and river. For more information on the general history of the local area, contact the relevant local history library - they will hold a wide variety of records and images relating to all aspects of their borough.
