Family favourite object nine

Image is a watercolour illustration of a consul air raid shelter.

The Docklands area was bombed heavily during the war. Shelters were used all over the country to keep people safe. The large Port of London Authority (PLA) shelter is real-sized replica of the shelters the PLA built to protect workers in the Second World War.

Outdoor workers such as firemen and policemen could use smaller ‘consul’ shelters. This consul shelter is from Plaistow in east London. These shelters weigh over half a ton and are made from steel. What do you think it would feel like in a shelter during the war?
