The slave trade: Barbary Corsairs and the Triangular Trade

This course examines the impact of the slave trade on people and continents from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century by focusing on the Barbary Corsairs and the Triangular Trade, which together brought three continents together: Africa, the Americas and Europe. Using the Museum of London Docklands' galleries, students will gain knowledge of their impact on the lives of the people of those continents.

Does Africa need Fair Trade?

International development specialist Dr Firoze Manji and Professor Chris Cramer from SOAS University debate the benefits of fair trade in Africa. In partnership with the Royal African Society, the Museum of London presents a discussion by leading experts on the evolution of fair trade, how it impacts the lives of the people it is intended to benefit and what it says about the way in which the West interacts with Africa.

Menelik Shabazz's ground-breaking film is an unconventional love story about a young black couple in eighties London. Resisting the usual stereotypes, the most radical thing about Shabazz's film is that its primary focus is on relationships rather than race.
Yasmin Alibhai-Brown: The Settler's Cookbook

Leading author, journalist and commentator Yasmin Alibhai-Brown talks about her much-admired The Settler's Cookbook: A Memoir of Love, Migration and Food. Through the story of Yasmin's family, The Settler's Cookbook traces the long journey of the East African Indians through famine, persecution and upheaval. Arriving in London, Alibhai-Brown's heritage is reflected in the food she makes – from a Shepherd's Pie sprinkled with chilli to a Victoria sponge enlivened by saffron and lime juice. Following the lecture there will be a book signing accompanied by a food tasting.
