Janie Hampton: How the Girl Guides won the war

Does Africa need Fair Trade?

International development specialist Dr Firoze Manji and Professor Chris Cramer from SOAS University debate the benefits of fair trade in Africa. In partnership with the Royal African Society, the Museum of London presents a discussion by leading experts on the evolution of fair trade, how it impacts the lives of the people it is intended to benefit and what it says about the way in which the West interacts with Africa.

Join in an evening of crafts, carols and Christmas cheer as the Museum of London Docklands opens its doors to some of the city's best craftspeople. There will be mince pies and mulled wine to accompany carol singing, craft-making activities and stalls selling unique gifts from jewellery and ceramics to badges and stationery. Please bring cash and cheque books along as credit card facilities may not be available.

WORLDwrite on suffrage

Watch a film made by young volunteers working with the education charity WORLDwrite on suffrage in the east end and join in a discussion afterwards. Filmed by creative volunteers investigating the hidden history of women who fought for and won the vote in London's east end, this film puts female history makers firmly on the map. The evening includes a chance to quiz the film makers.

Yasmin Alibhai-Brown: The Settler's Cookbook

Leading author, journalist and commentator Yasmin Alibhai-Brown talks about her much-admired The Settler's Cookbook: A Memoir of Love, Migration and Food. Through the story of Yasmin's family, The Settler's Cookbook traces the long journey of the East African Indians through famine, persecution and upheaval. Arriving in London, Alibhai-Brown's heritage is reflected in the food she makes – from a Shepherd's Pie sprinkled with chilli to a Victoria sponge enlivened by saffron and lime juice. Following the lecture there will be a book signing accompanied by a food tasting.
