Who was Jack the Ripper?

Who was Jack the Ripper? Will we ever know? A look at some of the many suspects with three of the leading authorities on Jack the Ripper, Robin Odell, Stewart Evans and Paul Begg and chaired by exhibition curator Alex Werner.

Notes on speakers:
British writer Stewart P. Evans is regarded as a leading authority on the Whitechapel murders. He is co-author of The Ultimate Jack the Ripper Sourcebook, Jack the Ripper: Letters From Hell, Jack the Ripper: Scotland Yard Investigates, The Lodger, and The Man Who Hunted Jack the Ripper.

Robin Odell wrote one of the first properly-researched books on the case, Jack the Ripper in Fact and Fiction (1965), and in 1988 co-wrote Jack the Ripper: Summing Up and Verdict to review the known facts and suspects in the 100 years since the murders. In a writing career spanning more than thirty-five years, he has written or co-written sixteen books, and last year Ripperology (2007), won an Edgar in the US for Best True Crime Book.

Paul Begg is a noted British researcher, writer and author. He conceived and co-wrote the Jack the Ripper A-Z, and is author of Jack the Ripper: The Facts and Jack the Ripper: The Definitive History. He is Editor of subscription magazine Ripperologist.

Would the Ripper be caught today?

PC Plod or Expert Witness? A comparison of police techniques between 1880s London and today, and a look at how far the police have moved since the Jack the Ripper investigations. Maggie Bird, Head of the Metropolitan Police Historical Collections will look at policing then, and Catherine Thacker, expert on forensic DNA profiling, will talk about contemporary investigations.
