Description

This course looks at the development of archaeology as a subject to identify the main themes and traditional approaches of the discipline. Using examples mainly from Britain, but also from abroad, it will examine how archaeological materials and sites are identified, how they may be characterised and interpreted, and dated. It will then examine the different approaches used to investigate archaeological sites in their context and will critically evaluate these differing approaches. The organisation of archaeology both in Britain and abroad will also be examined to compare how different societies use archaeology and what role archaeology has to play in society today. The tutor is Hedley Swain. Term 1 of the course starts on Monday 27 September 2010 and finishes on 13 December 2010. Term 2 starts on 10 January and runs until 28 March 2011. This course is run in partnership with Birkbeck: course code:FFAR060s4ACB CE; CATS points 30; Level 4. NB: Due to changes in the way the government funds lifelong learning there has been a change in the way fees are charged by Birkbeck: if you do not already have a degree then you will qualify for a reduction and will be charged a lower non ELQ rate ie £450 (or £225 if you are in receipt of benefit).
